Anyone ever switch Japan to a dictatorship? I start one war and it nearly put my economy into negative figures for a 200bil treasury. not to mention ticked off the USA at me. I got my pop up to 142m but maintaining taxes below 52% is dam near impossible without losing cash every cycle. I have so much surplus that it can make prices drop if I sell 2 cycles in a row. So getting into bond repayment range to pay the rest of them off seems impossible now.

Ya japan has the highest debt in relation to their GDP (233.1 percent).. its not easy to get them out of the economic situation they've put themselves in. My best suggestion would be to be a tech/unit design broker. Sell techs to any nation with cash, buy new ones as you earn cash then turn around and sell those to nations with cash etc etc. It used to be much worse but a few updates ago I reduced the interest rate on starting bonds from 3.5% to 1.5% to help some nations dig out of debt easier. I may reduce this further in a future update. As i mentioned in the other thread.. when you start as japan you get no bond controls due to them already being maxed in debt as far as the game is concerned, and no where near enough cash on hand to pay off any bonds. IF/when you make enough cash to pay off some bonds you'll eventually have the controls available to you. Also if real life debt isn't your thing you can always modify the scenario file to make countries start with NO debt. This requires no recache and its a simple switch to modify.
